Major Boost For Dairy Farmers As The County Gives 60 Heifers

In an effort to enhance the agricultural sector and address the growing demand for milk, the Marakwet County government has provided 60 heifers to farmers in Kapsowar ward, Marakwet West Sub County.

This initiative, spearheaded by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, Edwin Seroney, aims to substantially increase milk production by about 50 percent while also increasing households’ earnings.

During the handover ceremony of the cows to the beneficiaries, Seroney expressed the county government’s commitment to fulfilling Governor Wisley Rotich’s campaign pledge of bolstering household earnings through the Kilimo Biashara program.

“There is a high demand for milk in our county. We are also focused on meeting Governor Rotich’s vision for economic empowerment. In three years’ time, we expect Kapsowar to achieve a maximum daily milk production of 1200 litres,” announced Seroney.

One of the beneficiaries, John Kwambai, welcomed the county administration’s initiative to empower farmers through the purchase of heifers as well as the transformative agenda of the governor.

Kwambai expressed optimism that within the next two years, Kapsowar ward would be capable of producing sufficient milk to meet the domestic market, which would in turn enable area farmers to generate enough income for their sustenance.

“I would like to commend Governor Rotich for his visionary leadership and express my appreciation for his responsiveness. I wish him success as he continues to plan and implement positive changes in our county,” said Kwambai.

In addition to the heifers, each farmer received pakchong super napier grass cuttings, which were donated by the governor. The gesture aims to further support farmers in enhancing their cattle’s nutrition and overall well-being.

Seroney emphasized that the county is committed to revitalizing all cattle dips in the region to ensure the livestock remain healthy.
